Congratulations, Amarok users.
Thanks to the tireless efforts of Jeff Mitchell, your Ogg Vorbis files are now going to have a comment named AMAROK - REDISCOVER YOUR MUSIC AT HTTP://AMAROK.KDE.ORG.

For serious.

Updated: Please indicate the professionalism and maturity of Amarok's users in the box below.

Updated again: Apparently the brackets are an artifact of eyeD3's output. I would have known that, had the format been documented.

Dude seriously just stop using amarok and use xmms or something, your whining is getting really annoying. You seem to just enjoy bitching and not giving out contructive criticism, if amarok is such a crappy player why are you still using it? or better yet why haven't you started making a better player.

What is your problem people. If he points out a problem, contributes to a different product - who cares what he looks like? Are you all just trying to strengthen the impression that Linux is for idiots only?

Get a life people. Let developers haggle it out once in a while. If we are lucky something good will come from it. Otherwise, oh well... History belongs to the victor anyway, no matter what the merits are - as evidenced by OS/2 no longer being sold by IBM while its nearly impossible to buy a PC without MS Windows.

i think peoples problem stem from joes insistence on being insulting and lying and spreading fud whenever possible. his original post that started these comments is very misleading as atf doesnt write anything without being turned on first to ogg or anything else. i read the email exchange and whatever information jeff gave him joe just ignored while being derisive and complaining about not being given any information. as jeff showed in the email joe links to and in this lj post joe definitely already knew some of the information he was whining about (the owner id) and still whined about not having it. certainly makes it hard for good to come out of the email exchanges if joe wont stop whining and insulting long enough to tell jeff what he want and then comes and complains and lies publicly anyways

At the time of this posting there are absolutely no comments that indicate that the people that left them are Amarok users. Defending a good program against your silly whiny lies and FUD is something even Windows users can get into. Your assumptions just keep making you out to be a bigger and bigger asshole.

I am not certain that having a comment inserted into my ogg vorbis files is really going to lessen the experience of listening to them, however I can see how it may offend someone else. Generally, when I come across something within life which does causes such offense, I do a couple things. First, I cut it out of my life and then when I have returned to sanity I try to understand what truly caused me to be so deeply offended. More times than not, I have found that there is a misalignment within my attitude regulator. After a through debugging session, sometimes I am capable of trying the offender again with new results, but if not then there is no great loss in my life.

Just for the record, I use amarok on a daily basis to listen to mp3 and AAC formats left over from my switch from another OS which caused me great dissatisfaction.

I hope your move to San Jose was or is pleasant.

wtf, you dont document your shit. your page shows a playcounter that uses an email address. do you always use that one? if not where do you get the email address from? somewhere in the users environment? do you have the user type it in? your documentation is in no way clear.

Thanks for the feedback, I've updated the documentation accordingly.

Issues such as where the email comes from are part of Quod Libet's functional specification and not the technical specification of the format itself.

Okay, consider me a random representative of the group "Amarok users".

I'm here just to say that I have absolutely no idea what's going on here and that makes caring about this thing a little bit difficult.

Something about advertisatory comments? Big deal, the world is full of programs that put ad tags around; Vorbis got unlimited tags length because people wanted to store tons of metadata anyway. Something about capital letters? I'm fine with that, a little bit 1950s computing flavour will just make the thing a bit more interesting. Let's do FFT in Fortran too. Something about ATF? At least there's some documentation, the source is readily available and in an obvious place; I dare you to figure out HVSC DOCUMENTS/Songlengths.txt on your own (deceivingly simple, no?) =)

So please tell me why this is supposed to be a big deal?

Yes, you appear to represent them quite well, showing exactly the disparity between Joe's beliefs and the group's beliefs.

Your assertions come across to outsiders as "Amarok's doing no worse than other crappy software, and besides, it gives a cool campy feel. Hey, at least the source is available, nevermind what is or isn't on pages that outsiders might think is documentation." It seems everyone in your group is cool with that, after all it adds value. To those outside it, who mistrust the intentions to begin with (and believe the contains == is argument), it seems like crapping in tags, not telling what they ate to produce that aroma, and asserting superiority because nobody else can crap with quite the same artistic value.

As for why it's a big deal, I'd ask the batch of anons above. Until them and/or Seb, this was just another journal entry in the wide sea of the Internet.

I believe "Amarok's doing no worse than other crappy software" exactly as long as my observations don't go wildly contrary to that, and there's no damning proof to contrary. This post failed to move me either way in this regard.

Right now, here we have some random LiveJournal entry and some random mailing list post that apparently try to tell me that there's something weird going on in Amarok dev. I'm just an end user. I'm out like snowman as to what the future stuff means technically. Reading these out-of-blue comments just made me slowly realise this has something to do with supposed complexities of ATF. Maybe. I'm still not quite sure.

Saying "hey, Amarok users, the comment tags will be capitalised" has the exact same effect as the "save Betamax" campaign. (The Public says "why do we care about comment tag / obsolete video tape format?")

In other words, the original post or the mailing list post fail to tell me where's the controversy, the drama, the horror.

I believe we've found the PowerPoint of Death equivalent of open source pre-release communication. Here's the problem: Two geek camps are in middle of a debate, a random passer-by wanders by, and asks what's wrong. They reply something incomprehensible and keep arguing. The random passer-by goes home, waits three months, and is surprised when there's a new release of the software that does something weird. Then he thinks, "oh yeah, those people were rambling something about this, maybe..."

Now please tell me, will this... issue... introduce any complications for STS-115 Space Shuttle flight later this month? Because I have no idea whether or not it does, based on these comments, and I'm going to keep trusting that people don't introduce serious flaws on purpose on any stable releases of software.

There's no debate happening; each side is convinced the other side is only insulting it.

What's going on is the experimental ATF implementation, once stabilized and turned on, will add a tag to each of your songs so that it can track when you do things the library isn't otherwise able to. If you use Amarok you'll probably never notice it (unless it corrupts your files, but i did say stabilized). However if you use QL, you'll see these creepy advertisements for Amarok on any file being so tracked. If you delete them, you'll kill the tracking feature. So no falling space shuttles.

But that's not the complaint. The complaint is that the marketing page for ATF talks (talked?) down all other media players that don't do ATF. And yet nowhere is there documentation for how to interoperate in a way that Amarok can use. The name of the tag is withheld as if it's a big secret. It was shown in the output of a program on some random mailing list, but who knows if that's really the tag, or just a temporary one? However since the complaint was worded as an attack, the response was an attack, and as of yet there seems to be no chance of proper interoperability.

And I consider a tag name that reads like advertising to be crap. That's as close to horror as you'll get in this one. Well, that or the race conditions in early multi-process implementations.

Okay. I guessed as much.

I fail to see what's so bad about application-specific metadata in general (as long as other applications aren't confused about it and can silently retain it - as far as I understood anything about this debate, no one was crying "Amarok is breaking Ogg Vorbis spec with this stuff"), especially stuff that can be openly specced one way or other, and turned into a real de-facto standard.

I don't really consider it an "advertisement". Advertisement is supposed to tell something useful about a product. encoder=Ogg Drop b3: www.nouturn.com, now that's an advertisement.

(Reply to this) (Parent)(Thread)

[info]gesten
2006-08-24 02:09 pm UTC (link)
I'm surprised that "ENCODER=Ogg Drop b3: www.nouturn.com" seems like more of an advertisement than "AMAROK - REDISCOVER YOUR MUSIC AT HTTP://AMAROK.KDE.ORG=0123CDEF". The first often gives you some information about where the bulk of the tags were added, so if there's a bug, you may be able to work around it. The new Amarok tag -may- tell you the last thing to touch the tags.

And again, while advertisement is the complaint on this journal entry, the real complaint is that the nasty string isn't documented. I'd frown at such a non-semantic tag name being used in ogg files; if it's AMAROK:UFID or even HTTP://AMAROK.KDE.ORG:UFID I'd have no problem with it as UFID carries just enough semantics, and it's fine to namespace it. ATF:ID would be even better. And it may be that one of these will be used in the real release. It's just not documented.
